The first maxillary molar tooth contains several grooves and pits.

The names of the grooves are as follows:

Central
Buccal
Distolingual
Transverse

Sometimes it can be hard to identity the transverse groove on the oblique ridge, and actually, some authors state that the transverse groove is just a continuation of the central groove. The distolingual groove sometimes can extend beyond the lingual height of contour. And this groove can also continue to the root and present as a lingual root groove.

The first maxillary molar tooth has three pits, named the central, distal, and mesial pits. All of the mentioned pits serve as the apexes of the mesial, central, and distal fossae. The most evident and also the deepest is the central pit, which also means that it is a common site for tooth decay formation.

NOTE: the buccal groove does not cross the buccal height of contour.
