The occipital bone is a single trapezoidal-shaped bone that forms the base of the skull and consists of four parts surrounding the foramen magnum, which transmits the brainstem (more precisely, the medulla oblongata), the spinal branch of the accessory nerve (CN XI), vertebral arteries, anterior and posterior spinal arteries, also the alar ligaments and tectorial membrane.
