Static occlusion: centric occlusion

Centric occlusion (CO) is a type of static occlusion. It is the occlusion of opposing teeth when the mandible is in the centric relation. This occlusion is always made by patients when they get asked to bite their teeth together. It is also the contact between the most significant number of opposing teeth, so centric occlusion is tooth determined (tooth-tooth relationship). It may or may not coincide with the maximal intercuspal position (MIP) or maximal intercuspation - position in which the teeth of both arches are mostly interposed independent of condylar position. In other words, it is a maxillomandibular relation where the patient has closed the mouth so that the most number of teeth touch. Therefore, the maximal intercuspation is a maxillomandibular relation determined by tooth to tooth relationship.
