The proximal epiphysis is the upper end of the tibia, and it features the following landmarks:

Medial condyle - the medial expansion; lateral condyle - the lateral expansion at the proximal end of the tibia;
Intercondylar area - separates both condyles of the tibia and is is divided into anterior and posterior intercondylar areas by the intercondylar eminence;
Intercondylar eminence - a bony elevation on the proximal tibial surface between the condyles that also separates both articular facets of the tibia; it serves for attachment of the cruciate ligaments and menisci of the knee;
Two articular facets:
- Superior articular surfaces of the tibia (also known as the tibial plateau) - the superior surfaces of the tibial condyles, which articulate with the articular surfaces of the femoral condyles at the knee joint;
- Fibular articular surface - the articular facet for the head of the fibula on the posterolateral aspect of the lateral tibial condyle.

The diaphysis of the tibia is triangular in cross-sections and has three margins:

Anterior margin - facing anteriorly, features the tibial tuberosity, a rough-ended area on the upper end of the anterior margin where the patellar ligament attaches;
Interosseous margin - facing the fibula, serves for the attachment of the interosseous membrane of the leg along most of the margin;
Medial margin - facing medially.

The mentioned margins separate three surfaces that can be found on the diaphysis of the tibia:

Medial surface - directed anteromedially;
Lateral surface - directed anterolaterally;
Posterior surface - facing posteriorly, features the soleal line - extends obliquely from the upper, lateral part of the shaft of the tibia, downward and across to the medial side. The soleal line serves for attachment of the soleus muscle.
