The phalanges are digital bones that form the skeleton of the fingers in the hands and feet.

The first finger in the human foot is known as the big toe and it has only two phalanges - proximal and distal. The other digits each have three phalanges - proximal, intermediate (middle) , and distal.

The three phalanges (or two in the case of the first finger) articulate with one another at the interphalangeal joints. The proximal phalanges also join with the metatarsal bones of the foot at the metatarsophalangeal joints.

The phalanges are classified as long bones, and each phalanx consists of the three parts: base, body, and head.

Base - the proximal extremity of a phalanx. The base of each phalanx of the first row presents oval, concave articular surface, while the bases of second and third row phalanges each presents a double concavity separated by a median ridge.
Body - the middle part of a phalanx, which is concave on the plantar surface and convex on the dorsal surface. The sides of the body have rough areas that serve for attachment of fibrous sheaths of the flexor tendons.
Head - the distal end of a phalanx; smaller than the base, ends in two condyles.
